Checking Your Computer Specifications

Review the information below for your computer type to check compatibility with Silhouette software.

PC

Click here for the official Microsoft website instructions for finding your computer specifications.

Mac

Click here for the official Apple website instructions for finding your computer specifications.

If your computer does not meet the requirements, you will need to use an alternate computer in order to run the software.

Software Update vs. Upgrade

Updating the software is different from Upgrading the software.

Software Update

When you update the software, you are moving from one version of the software to a higher version of the software.

ExampleYou are running version 4.5.000. You are prompted in the software that there is a software update or you find a new version listed on the Silhouette website. You then download the new software installation program and run it. This updates you to the new version 4.6.000.

Software updates provide you with bug fixes and software improvements.

To update your already existing Silhouette Studio software version on your computer, whether or not you are running an upgraded edition:

  1. Close Silhouette Studio
  2. Go to the Silhouette Studio software download page
  3. Click on the 'DOWNLOAD' button
  4. Run the update program once the download is complete
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Silhouette Studio selecting all default settings recommended

Software updates are free.

Software Upgrade

Upgrades are higher editions of the software that can be purchased to provide access to additional software features

This means that you can move from the Basic Edition of the software (the free edition accessed when you first download and install the software) to a higher edition with more features, such as the Designer Edition, Designer Edition Plus, and Business Edition.

Though it should not occur, click here if an upgrade is lost after updating the software.

Uninstalling or Downgrading Software Version

Instructions are found below to remove the Silhouette Studio software. If needed, you can downgrade to a lower version that may operate more reliably.

Uninstalling Silhouette Studio

PC

  1. Go to the Start menu
  2. Open the Control Panel
  3. Select the Programs option
  4. Locate and select 'Silhouette Studio'
  5. Click on the Remove or Uninstall option
NOTERemoval should not affect the library or license key if present
  6. Once successfully removed, restart the computer

Mac

  1. Select the Go menu at the top of the desktop
  2. Select the Applications option
  3. Drag all instances of Silhouette Studio to the Trash
NOTERemoval should not affect the library or license key if present
  4. Empty the Trash

Downgrading to Lower Version

If you are running the current software version and need to move to a lower version, your computer may not allow you to install a lower version on top of a newer version.

If you need to install a downgraded software version for any reason, you can do the following:

PC

  1. Make sure you have uninstalled Silhouette Studio (see steps above)
  2. Go to the Silhouette Studio download page at https://www.silhouetteamerica.com/software/ss
  3. Click on 'Download Legacy Versions'
  4. Click on the 'Download' button for the desired lower version from the available list (example below)
NOTEThe Download button should automatically detect your computer OS type and download the correct version. However, you can manually download any OS version by clicking on the drop-down arrow to the right of the 'Download' button.

If you do not see the lower version you are looking for on this list, unfortunately, this indicates it has been removed from our system and we can longer offer it to you.

  5. Wait for the download to be completed

    Example: PC/Windows

    Example: Mac
  6. Run the downloaded installation program to install Silhouette Studio at the lower version

Mac

You can run lower versions and higher versions of an application at the same time on a Mac.

To downgrade to a lower version on a Mac follow the same steps as above, unless you want to run multiple versions on your computer at the same time, in which case you can skip the step to remove the older version.

However, we recommend only running a single version to avoid any potential issues or confusion.

Using Beta Software Versions

Beta versions of software may be provided for open testing purposes to check out new features and bug fixes.

  5. Click on the 'Download' button for the desired Beta version
  6. Run and install the downloaded program
